Jitterbug Perfume – A Literary Classic in the Making
Birth and death were easy…it was life that was hard — that is just one of the many insightful quotes that one can get from the Jitterbug Perfume. With such a title, it is easy to mistakenly think that the Jitterbug Perfume is some kind of new fragrance but it is in fact a timeless novel published in the early 1980s.
The Creation of Jitterbug Perfume
When novelist Tom Robbins wrote this book in 1984, he was not that well-known in the literary world. However, he has already published three novels before this — Still Life with Woodpecker, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and Another Roadside Attraction. Despite the good quality of his work, his name was still far from being a household name.
But there is something about Jitterbug Perfume that caught on among readers all over the world. It has been called a thought-provoking, highly imaginative, and remarkably un-ordinary story by critics everywhere. It is quite interesting that despite all the favorable reviews that this book has received, Tom Robbins still does not seem to get the popularity and fame that he obviously deserves.
The Plot of the Story
Jitterbug Perfume is a story that takes place in different times and different places, so it is practically impossible to summarize it with just a single plot. Basically, it starts in a French perfumery and moves through New Orleans during a totally different time setting. As a matter of fact, it consists of four separate stories that seamlessly intertwine with each other, each one dealing with issues such as the essence of the universe, the existence of God and the admirable qualities of the vegetable beet.
Based on this novel, it is easy to see that Tom Robbins does not write merely to entertain readers, although he certainly accomplishes that as well with his humorous lines. Instead, it would seem that his main objective is to encourage readers to think and explore their own beliefs about life and the universe. Reading Jitterbug Perfume is also obviously not for everyone because in order to completely appreciate this literary work, one would need to be knowledgeable about classical mythology, as well as have an open mind about the different philosophies of life. With its cleverly written content, it won’t be surprising at all to see this book alongside other great classics of our time in the next few years.
